Research and Planning - Initial Ideas

4th November - 22nd November

The Female Form

I chose the female form to begin my research as I think it plays a large part in the area of
research I wish to progress onto. In my sketch book I have explained that over time there have been various periods in fashion that have exaggerated and shown off the female form, where as , I feel, today's fashions are mainly about being different and have concentrated on pushing the boundaries often resulting in 'boxy' and 'boyish' trends .

Here I have used key images of the female figure which show it at its best.Although most of these figures are nude and aren't using clothing to give them any shape or structure they perfectly demonstrate the beauty of the female form. Cinched waists, full busts and hips. The perfect hourglass figure is what i want to achieve in my collection.

I have started to look into past fashions
that are particularly relevant to my interest
of showing off and accentuating the female
figure. On the left is a image of a Galliano
dress inspired by Edwardian garments . In
particular i like the built in corset. On the right i have
looked at a Victorian image of a womans dress ,
paying attention to the collar detail of using lots
of frilled lace.
I have also used a image of a French 18th century male
outfit to show that even male attire was more
detailed and almost feminine than much of todays womens wear.

Images from current designers who are my
main inspiration of today's fashion industry
and who are also focusing on styles of
the must similar to my own. Showing that there is
room for such designs in the modern fashion industry.

To the left is another John Galliano gown.
This has used a lot of fabric as would have Victorian
and Edwardian dresses, as well as a cinched waist.
Vivienne Westwood also has exaggerated the
waist line and gone for a lot of volume through
the use of fabric and clever pattern cutting
techniques.

Both designers have used vibrant colours and modern touches
to give the designs a contemporary feel.

As well as looking at Victorian and Edwardian
dresses i have also looked at the fashions of
the 1940's and 1950's which also have
characteristics that i will be aiming for in my FMP.
e.g. waist cinching and flared full skirts.

I have been looking at colours of nature for my colour
scheme . The colours will mainly be earthy and ocean colours.
Dull muddy browns and deep turquoise are what i currently
have in mind.
